Medical Officer/Duty Doctor : Oncology

The Medical Officer / Duty Doctor – Oncology will be responsible for providing round-the-clock clinical care to oncology inpatients, assisting in treatment planning, and managing emergencies related to cancer care. This requires strong clinical acumen, attention to detail, and the ability to handle critically ill patients in a specialized oncology setting.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Provide continuous medical care and supervision to oncology inpatients and ward patients.
• Assist consultants in the diagnosis, treatment planning, and management of cancer patients.
• Conduct routine patient examinations, monitor clinical progress, and update treatment records.
• Manage oncology-related emergencies including treatment side effects and complications.
• Coordinate with oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, and nursing staff for integrated patient care.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests including blood investigations, imaging, and pathology reports.
• Administer prescribed treatments, medications, and supportive care as per protocols.
• Monitor chemotherapy and radiotherapy patients for adverse reactions and complications.
• Ensure timely escalation of critical cases to senior consultants.
• Maintain accurate, detailed, and confidential patient medical records.
• Assist in admission, transfer, and discharge processes of oncology patients.
• Provide pain management and palliative care support to terminally ill patients.
• Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans, side effects, and care instructions.
• Support infection control practices, especially for immunocompromised patients.
• Participate in oncology ward rounds and multidisciplinary tumor board discussions.
• Ensure adherence to hospital protocols, oncology guidelines, and safety standards.
• Handle emergency situations in oncology wards effectively and promptly.
• Assist in procedures such as biopsies, catheter care, and minor interventions.
• Coordinate with pharmacy for chemotherapy drug administration and management.
• Maintain proper documentation for medico-legal and clinical audit purposes.
• Work in rotational shifts including night duties, weekends, and emergency calls.
• Stay updated with oncology treatment protocols and supportive care practices.
• Ensure compassionate, patient-centric care for cancer patients and their families.
• Contribute to improving quality of oncology care services within the hospital.
