The Denim Day campaign is called "Denim Day" because it was inspired by a court case in Italy in 1999 where a rape conviction was overturned because the victim was wearing tight jeans, and the court suggested that she had consented to the assault. In response to this decision, women in the Italian Parliament protested by wearing jeans to work. The idea of wearing denim clothing to show support for survivors and to challenge harmful attitudes about sexual violence spread quickly, and the movement became known as Denim Day.
