Consultant - Critical Care

The Consultant – Critical Care will be responsible for managing patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), including those requiring advanced life support, invasive monitoring, and multidisciplinary interventions. This demands strong clinical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to make quick, evidence-based decisions in high-pressure situations.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Provide comprehensive care to critically ill patients in ICU, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning.
• Manage patients requiring ventilatory support, hemodynamic monitoring, and life-sustaining therapies.
• Perform and supervise invasive procedures such as intubation, central line insertion, arterial line placement, and chest tube insertion.
• Monitor patient progress, laboratory results, and imaging to guide ongoing treatment decisions.
• Lead multidisciplinary ICU rounds and coordinate care with specialists, nursing staff, and allied healthcare professionals.
• Manage complex cases including sepsis, multi-organ failure, trauma, and post-operative critical care.
• Ensure timely response to emergencies, including code blue and rapid response situations.
• Develop and implement ICU protocols, clinical pathways, and patient safety measures.
• Supervise and mentor junior doctors, residents, and ICU nursing staff.
• Ensure adherence to infection control practices and critical care safety standards.
• Maintain accurate and detailed clinical documentation, ICU charts, and treatment records.
• Communicate effectively with patients’ families regarding clinical condition, prognosis, and treatment plans.
• Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, case discussions, and morbidity and mortality reviews.
• Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, audits, and accreditation processes.
• Optimize utilization of ICU resources, including beds, equipment, and staff.
• Manage end-of-life care discussions and palliative care decisions with compassion and ethical consideration.
• Stay updated with advancements in critical care medicine and technologies.
• Participate in academic activities including teaching, training, and research.
• Ensure compliance with hospital policies, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Handle medico-legal cases with appropriate documentation and adherence to guidelines.
• Coordinate with emergency, OT, and ward teams for patient transfers and continuity of care.
• Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, and excellence within the ICU.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and professional conduct at all times.
• Support the development and expansion of critical care services within the hospital.
• Contribute to improving patient outcomes and overall quality of intensive care services.
