FAQ

Who made the first denim?

The origins of denim are somewhat unclear, but it is believed to have originated in France in the 16th century. The fabric was originally called "serge de Nimes" after the city of Nimes in France, and it was a durable and sturdy fabric that was used for work clothes such as overalls and jackets.

In the 19th century, the fabric became popular in the United States, particularly in the western states, where it was used for durable workwear for miners, cowboys, and other laborers. Levi Strauss is often credited with creating the first denim jeans in the 1870s, which were originally designed as durable work pants for miners in California.

Why is it called denim?

The Denim Day campaign is called "Denim Day" because it was inspired by a court case in Italy in 1999 where a rape conviction was overturned because the victim was wearing tight jeans, and the court suggested that she had consented to the assault. In response to this decision, women in the Italian Parliament protested by wearing jeans to work. The idea of wearing denim clothing to show support for survivors and to challenge harmful attitudes about sexual violence spread quickly, and the movement became known as Denim Day.

Why is today called Denim Day?

Denim Day because it is the day when the annual Denim Day campaign is observed. The campaign originated in Italy in 1999, after a court overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans, suggesting that she had consented to the assault. Women in the Italian Parliament protested the decision by wearing jeans to work, and the movement spread throughout the world.
