Pantothenate Kinase-Associated Neurodegeneration

Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) is a rare genetic disorder belonging to a group of diseases known as neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA). PKAN is characterized by progressive degeneration of the nervous system, particularly the basal ganglia, resulting in movement disorders, muscle stiffness, speech difficulties, and cognitive impairment. An abnormal buildup of iron in the brain is a key feature of this condition.
